Kanchivaram sarees, also known as Kanjivaram sarees, are an exquisite testament to the rich cultural heritage of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The legacy of these sarees dates back to the reign of the Chola Dynasty, approximately 400 years ago. During this period, the art of silk weaving flourished, especially with the migration of two prominent weaving communities from Andhra Pradesh to Kanchipuram. These artisans brought their unparalleled expertise and began crafting sarees inspired by the region's temples and mythological narratives. Each Kanchivaram saree is a labor of love, a masterpiece cherished and passed down through generations.

The Weaving Process

The creation of a Kanchivaram saree is a meticulous, labor-intensive process that unfolds in several steps. These sarees are crafted from pure mulberry silk, renowned for its durability and rich texture. The process involves three primary stages:

• Preparation of Silk Threads: The silk threads are dipped in rice water and sun-dried to enhance their thickness and stiffness. This treatment ensures that the fabric remains strong and long-lasting.
• Dyeing: The silk threads are then dyed in vibrant, striking colors, readying them for the intricate weaving process.
• Weaving with Zari Threads: The dyed silk threads are woven together with zari threads, made from silver and gold, which add a distinctive sheen and shimmer under light. The weaving typically involves the use of three shuttles, with the border and pallu (the part of the saree that drapes over the shoulder) often woven separately and then interlocked. This technique, known as the korvai weave, ensures the saree's durability, even if it tears.

The staff at Kanakavalli were incredibly attentive, taking the time to explain the nuances of each saree and helping me try them on. It was a delightful experience to adorn such stunning sarees. I left with a gorgeous chocolate brown saree adorned with gold butta and a pastel border, a piece that I will cherish forever.
